Just after midnight on the 22nd of February a head-on collision occurred in Clermont County, sending three, including a toddler, to the hospital. The Ohio State Highway Patrol has stated that a Chevy Monte Carlo, traveling northbound on SR 133 collided with a Chevy Cavalier headed south at around 12:45 a.m. Wednesday morning. While traveling north, the Monte Carlo, drifted left, crossing the center line and barreling head-on into the southbound Cavalier. The collision was sudden and violent; the result was devastating. The drivers of both vehicles sustained injuries and were left trapped within their heavily damaged cars. Emergency units soon responded and worked quickly to free the wounded drivers from the wreckage. In these instances, hydraulic rescue tools are often necessary as crushed and compacted doors may have to be pried open or removed completely to extricate crash victims. Once removed the drivers in the Wayne Township collision were transported by AirCare to University Hospital where they are both reported to be in stable condition. The Monte Carlo also had a passenger at the time of the crash, a 14-month-old boy. The toddler was rushed by ambulance to University Hospital as well, but fortunately did not appear to have sustained serious injuries. Children who are properly secured in approved and age-appropriate safety seats increase their chances of surviving a severe collision by nearly eighty percent. Luckily, the toddler in the Wayne Township crash had been appropriately restrained in a safety seat upon impact. Ohio troopers report, however, that the driver was not wearing a safety belt during the head-on collision. A common, yet often unexpected, cause of injury and even death to children involved in car accidents is being crushed by adults who were themselves not properly secured with safety belts. Studies have shown a quarter of all severe injuries sustained in car wrecks are a result of passengers colliding with one another on impact. Police have not yet released any additional details on the case as it remains under investigation.
