Caregiver Charged After Elderly Woman Dies in Parking Lot of Ohio Assisted-Living Home

There are nearly 80,000 seniors currently living in nursing homes across the state of Ohio.

With a number that high there's a good chance you yourself have a family member in a nursing or assisted living home. But how can you be sure that your loved one is being looked after by attentive and compassionate caregivers and not falling victim to abuse or neglect? In early April, an 84-year-old woman was found dead in the parking lot of the Ohio senior residential living facility responsible for helping her live out her final years with dignity. She's believed to have died from hypothermia after wandering from her room in the middle of the night. This followed another incident, less than a week prior at the same facility, when a resident crawled from her window without being noticed by the nursing home staff. This episode could have easily ended in death as well, but fortunately the woman was found by police. After a thorough investigation into the death of the 84-year-old, the Ohio Department of Health found the woman to be 'cognitively impaired' and 'exhibited wandering tendencies,' and the assisted living home was aware of both. On top of that, an alarm that notifies employees when a door is opened was known to malfunction and didn't go off when the 84-year-old walked outside to her . It was also found that the facility was understaffed, which became the justification by the one staff member that was on duty the night the woman died. That staff member was arrested on June 1 and is now facing charges of patient neglect. The staff member had been told to check on the woman every thirty minutes, but nearly 2 and half hours passed from the last time she checked on the senior to the time she was found dead in the parking lot. Neglect is the most common form of nursing home abuse in Southern Ohio. Educate yourself on the and give your loved ones a fighting chance at a fulfilled and happy life.
