Hamilton County Pedestrian Accident Leads to New Stops Signs After 9-Year-Old is Killed

Pedestrian accidents are often devastating and the injuries inflicted are usually severe. People that are struck in Hamilton County pedestrian accidents are at an incredibly high risk for...and far too often end up being killed.

Anytime a bystander is hit by a vehicle it's a tragedy, but a recent pedestrian accident in Cincinnati is even more heartbreaking because it involved a child. Last March, in the neighborhood of Westwood, a 9-year-old was waiting for her school bus at the intersection of Lafeuille Avenue and Westbrook Drive when she ran across the street to talk to a friend -- she never made it back to the other side. She was struck by a van which pushed her into the path of a Metro bus. The little girl was killed instantly, and the community has been grieving ever since. But the neighborhood didn't simply mourn, they took action to make sure that a similar accident would never occur again.

They began by making their own signs to warn motorists to watch out for children, and parents have also been taking turns watching the kids as they get on and off the bus each day. They also petitioned the city in hopes of reducing the speed limit on Lafeuille Avenue and getting speed bumps or stop signs installed.

Lafeuille Ave has long been considered a dangerous road since it's winding with hidden driveways and blind spots with no breaks to discourage speeding and has seen 58 car accidents within the past few years. The city of Cincinnati responded by increasing police presence on the road and have issued over 35 tickets since the Hamilton County pedestrian accident. But they went a step further and finally installed stop signs along the street, including the intersection where the fourth grader was killed. The Westwood neighborhood is still actively trying to keep their children safe and have been standing at the intersection making sure cars respect the new signs.
