Motorcyclists are at the peril of negligent drivers

Following up on yesterdays' blog concerning the dangers of summer activities such as riding a bicycle, another summer favorite of many Americans and in particular, Ohioans, is riding motorcycles. Undoubtedly, the biker is generally open and exposed to dangers and perils caused by negligent motorists. As evidence by this morning's Cincinnati Enquirer article, last evening, on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, a biker and his passenger were seriously injured when an apparent negligent motorist lost control of their car, ran left of the center lane of travel and negligently collided with the motorcyclist and his passenger. A preliminary investigation of the loss by the police showed that the crash was apparently related to drugs or alcohol. . Bike enthusiasts consider riding a motorcycle pure enjoyment. However, to fully enjoy all that a bike has to offer, the dangers associated with this lawful activity should be addressed before a rider heads out on the roads of Ohio. Unlike a car driver and a car passenger, who are protected on all sides in their vehicle, a motorcyclist and passenger are dangerously exposed to the elements. There is no sheet metal on the side of a motorcycle to protect the biker from a side impact collision. As such, all motorcyclist's must take this exposure to injury into consideration when purchasing mandatory insurance to cover their bike. Due to the increased danger associated with the activity of riding a motorcycle, if a rider is involved in an accident, injury is likely to occur. As such, motorcyclists should carry as much uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage as they can afford to purchase. I see in my personal injury law practice far too many serious injuries where there is insufficient insurance coverage to pay for the damages. The only way to protect oneself from negligence of others is by purchasing large amounts of uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage and adequate medical payment coverage to protect the driver and passenger on the motorcycle. If you have questions about finding insurance coverage, what insurance carriers to consider purchasing a policy from or any other question, call me. I would be happy to help. Remember Hamilton County, Cincinnati and Ohio, that insurance coverage must be purchased before an accident occurs. Make sure appropriate insurance coverage is in place.
