Uninsured & Underinsured Motorist Coverage

The most important provision of any vehicle insurance policy is the uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.

The most important provision of any vehicle insurance policy is the uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. It is imperative that consumers purchase uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage which in an accident can protect themselves. Every day in Ohio there are hundreds of vehicle accidents. Unfortunately, many times in these collisions, there is no insurance coverage to cover the loss to property and person. Currently, the law of Ohio declares that all vehicles driven on the road must carry insurance coverage in the amount of $12,500 per person or $25,000 per accident or a bond can be purchased which provides identical coverage limitations. Although Ohio mandates these minimum coverage, the amounts mandated currently by law are insufficient. Automobile Insurance Companies spend a lot of money advertising in Ohio to sell such policies. Every day one can watch the television and/or search the internet for companies which are lining up to sell consumers "state minimum policies". The reason is that these policies are sold at such a high rate is they are very profitable for the insurance companies. In an accident where someone sustains life altering injuries, the insurance company is released from responsibility upon making a minimum payment of $12,500; however, the victims damages from the accident often times are much larger than the minimum coverage. Further, with the economic realities of 2012, many people can only afford basic coverage; however, I suggest this is one commodity on which you cannot skimp. The average consumer would be surprised to learn that larger policy limits than state minimum coverage do not cost must more than the basic state minimum coverage. I educate all my clients on this very point and advocate that the minimum policy which should be purchased for automobile insurance is what is called a $100,000/$300,000 policy. Certainly, higher coverage can be purchased; however, the basic minimum standard which should be purchased is a $100,000/$300,000 policy rather than $12,500/$25,000 minimum policy. Higher limits can certainly be bought and it is the author's opinion that the more coverage purchased, the better protected on the roads of our State. Please call me to discuss this topic or consult with your local agent for insight on coverage limitations. The bottom line is that a consumer should always buy an insurance policy based upon the uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage not the liability limitations. Whatever amount of coverage you purchase for uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage will automatically provide identical coverage under the liability provision of the policy. Protect yourself. Every client I meet with in my practice is advised about the importance of Uninsured and Underinsured motorist coverage.
