Alcohol suspected in fiery motorcycle crash

Motorcycles are one of the most enjoyable and efficient ways to travel the roads, but motorcyclists are often at a disadvantage on the roads when it comes to safety. Bikes are narrower with fewer lights, which makes them more difficult for car and truck drivers to see. Inattentive drivers — as well as intoxicated drivers — can pose a grave danger to motorcycle operators and passengers.

The driver of a sport utility vehicle in northern Ohio is facing charges related to a collision with a motorcycle that left the bike in flames and sent the rider to the hospital. Cleveland police say the charges include aggravated vehicular assault and operating a vehicle under the influence.

The 24-year-old driver was turning across the motorcycle’s path without acknowledging the rider, who then attempted to stop in time to avoid a collision. The motorcycle slid into the side of the SUV with some speed, igniting a fire and causing severe injury to the 22-year-old rider. The driver of the SUV then fled the scene before being arrested by Cleveland police.

The driver, who was uninjured, was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a suspended license. The motorcyclist is currently recovering in an Ohio hospital from severe burns, facial injuries and broken bones.

Victims of motorcycle injuries and their families have rights to apply for reimbursement of medical expenses as well as compensation for lost wages and other accident-related losses. Experienced attorneys can help crash victims weigh their options and determine the best course of action.
