Halloween safety tips for parents and teens

The sweetest and scariest time of the year is just a few weeks away. Your teenager has probably told you what they want to be for Halloween this year, and now you are working to help them prepare their costume. As you think about what they wear, you have also probably considered how they will be safe, especially now as they grow more independent.

The bad news is that dangerous behavior like distracted driving is at an all-time high. The good news is that methods of keeping your teen safe are also growing. If your teen is ready to go out on their own trick or treating in the neighborhood, now is the time to plan and prepare for their safety.

Here are four safety tips for teens on Halloween:

1. Carry a flashlight or reflective bag

It is possible to be seen without interfering with the look of a costume. Encourage your teen to carry a flashlight or help them find reflective foil bags which are sometimes distributed at school or grocery stores.

2. Review street crossing and safe zones

Remind your teen to use crosswalks and to look both ways before crossing the street. They should walk facing traffic as close to the curb as possible so that they can see cars approaching and oncoming drivers can see them.

You should also review which houses and streets are okay to visit and which ones you would like them to avoid. Some neighbors may also be willing to coordinate as safe houses in case of an emergency while your teen is away from home.

3. Encourage them to go out in a group with a parent supervising

Your teen probably wants some independence this year, but that doesn’t mean they have to be unsupervised. Chances are they will be with a group of friends, and one parent may be willing to stay within a block or two to keep an eye on them if anything goes wrong.

4. Use smartphone tracking apps and communication

Your teenager probably loves their smartphone as much as they love their friends and candy. Their device can provide you with built-in methods of tracking and communicating with them as they move throughout the neighborhood.

Tracking apps are available in the app store or through your provider that can help you keep an eye on teens. You can also encourage them to check in with you at certain times throughout the night.

It is possible to be injured by a distracted driver or by hazards on someone else’s property while celebrating Halloween. Planning for safety can help take some of the tricks out of treating this year.
